Kuala Lumpur is the capital city of Malaysia and a fascinating melting pot of cultures and people. The tropical climate of Malaysia gives rise to a wondrous collection of weird and wonderful beasts. Get into the thick of it exploring jungle temples, such as the Batu Caves and Snake Temple. Though full of venomous snakes, no one has ever been bitten as the snakes are said to be calmed by the incense smoke.

Gunung Mulu National Park is in Malaysian Borneo and contains the largest cave system in the world, the Mulu Caves. The diversity of wildlife on Borneo is legendary, and you may be lucky enough to spot the elusive Borneo Pygmy Elephant. Back on the mainland, take a nighttime cruise on the Selangor River at Kuala Selangor to see the largest colony of fireflies on earth lighting up the mango groves.

• The country is quite conservative, so dress neatly and appropriately (men and women) and avoid PDAs. If you wish to visit religious sites and Mosques, you will have to cover up with long trousers and sleeves. Women will have to cover their hair and chest with a scarf.
• It is good to cover up with light fabrics nonetheless, as the intense sun saps the energy and can quickly burn. Remember to stay hydrated.
• Look out for the “women only” subway cars.
• Avoid a cultural faux pas and handle food only with your right hand, as the left is used in the, ahem, restroom!
