  • Safe travelling: Due to various factors, the UAE is a known target in terms of terrorism and any location could be targeted.  In general, you have very little to worry about but it is important to remain vigilant at all times.  For example, steer clear of any unattended bags, packages and so on.  Practising these safe habits is much the same as avoiding walking around alone in a potentially dangerous part of town.  It’s best to be aware of your surroundings at all times and prepared for anything.
  • Consumption of alcohol: Non-Muslim visitors may get a license that permits them to drink alcohol at licensed venues.  These are only valid in the Emirate where it was issued.  The legal drinking age is 18 in most cities and 21 in Dubai.  Hotels and similar establishments are only permitted to serve alcohol to persons 21 and older in all cities except Sharjah where the consumption of alcohol is illegal.
  • Smoking: Electronic cigarettes are illegal and will most likely be confiscated upon entry.
  • Dress code: It is important to understand the culture, religion and acceptable behaviour.  Women in particular need to pay attention to the general dress code.  Tops need to cover the shoulders and upper arms at least.  The tops of legs also need to be covered and underwear should not be visible at all.  In the privacy of your hotel room, you may dress as you please but you need to observe these customs when in public.  Swimwear should only be worn at designated swimming areas.
  • Local laws: The locals and officials do not take kindly to rude or offensive behaviour.  Mind your hand gestures and be polite at all times.  Public displays of affection is not generally acceptable and there have been arrests in the past for kissing in public.  Two members of the opposite sex may not share a hotel room unless they are married since sex before marriage is, in fact, illegal in the UAE.  Satellite phones, listening devices and similar technology may require you to obtain a license before taking it with you.  Check with the relevant authorities before packing expensive equipment that could be confiscated at the boarder.
  • Photographs: Taking photographs of certain government buildings is prohibited.  Be very careful before snapping away!  In addition, you should not photograph anyone without their permission and understand that hobbies like bird watching might not be completely understood by locals.
